Tourism in coastal zones can be sustainable if managed through an integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) approach. The ICZM is a multi-sectoral governance approach that is adaptive in order to balance the development, usage and protection of coastal environments. This approach also creates a constructive dialogue between the interests of authorities and multiple user-groups. In order to pursue sustainable tourism, it is important to prepare government representatives and other relevant actors for developing effective environmental legislation within their jurisdictions.
The National Workshop on Tourism and the Environment and Integrated Coastal Zone Management was conducted between 19 and 21 November, 2002. Eleven participants ranging from Magistrates, to Members of Parliament, representatives of the Research Council, and the Wildlife Foundation, were involved in the Workshop.
