Integrated Coastal Zone Management and Sustainable Tourism, Lebanon, 2004

Tuesday 26 October 2004, by Maria Ortiz

Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) is a mutli-sectoral governance approach that differs from the sectoral management approach. The ICZM approach requires stakeholder input and pays particular attention to the local environmental system in order to integrate the economic, environmental, and social needs of present and future generations. For the effective implementation of the ICZM approach, decision-makers need to conduct administrative and organisational processes through an integrated and unified system. It is particularly essential for the local and state level officials to be trained about the legal instruments available for the implementation of ICZM as this is a vital means to achieve sustainable tourism at the local, national and international levels.

The National Workshop on Integrated Coastal Zone Management and Sustainable Tourism was conducted between 26 and 29 October, 2004. Thirty-five representatives of the Environment, Justice, and Tourism Ministries; Municipalities; and the United Nations, participated in the Workshop.
