Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Tunisia, 2002

Integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) is a holistic, dynamic and multi-disciplinary approach for the management of coastal zones that are impacted upon by diverse human activities and industrial sectors. Through the development and implementation of national-level ICZM legislation, the usage of coastal zones can be harmonized in a way to ensure the sustainable development of these natural habitats of flora and fauna.

The Regional Workshop on Integrated Coastal Zone Management was conducted between 8 and 11 October, 2002. The thirty-nine participants from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, represented various Ministries such as the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture, Fisheries, Commerce and Tourism; universities; and NGOs.

Objectives
- Familiarize participants with national, regional and international legal instruments on ICZM.
- Strengthen national legislative and institutional capacities.

Outcomes
- Deepened understanding of relevant environmental legislation.
- Evaluation of national capacities through a self-assessment questionnaire and discussion of a model law on the sustainable management of coastal zones.
