Integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) is a holistic, dynamic and multi-disciplinary approach for the management of coastal zones that are impacted upon by diverse human activities and industrial sectors. Through the development and implementation of national-level ICZM legislation, the usage of coastal zones can be harmonized in a way to ensure the sustainable development of these natural habitats of flora and fauna.
The Regional Workshop on Integrated Coastal Zone Management was conducted between 8 and 11 October, 2002. The thirty-nine participants from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, represented various Ministries such as the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture, Fisheries, Commerce and Tourism; universities; and NGOs.
Objectives
Familiarize participants with national, regional and international legal instruments on ICZM.
Strengthen national legislative and institutional capacities.
Outcomes
Deepened understanding of relevant environmental legislation.
Evaluation of national capacities through a self-assessment questionnaire and discussion of a model law on the sustainable management of coastal zones.
