UNITAR and OSCE (Office of the Co-ordinator of OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities) have organized three national workshops on "Ensuring the Quality and Quantity of Freshwater in the Sava River Basin" in Bosnia and Herzegovina (October, 2004), Croatia (May, 2005) and Serbia and Montenegro (November, 2005). The national workshops established networks among local actors from the Sava River basin to promote information exchange, identified the role played by local actors in river basin management (particularly in the context of shared resources) and encouraged the public in general to participate in the decision making process.

As a culmination of the three national workshops, a "Regional Workshop: Network Development of Local Actors in the Sava River Basin" was organized in Croatia on 11 and 12 Septemeber 2006. The workshop aimed at creating a network of local actors from the Sava River Basin on water resource management.

The workshop enabled local and regional goverment officials, water suppliers and NGOs representatives from Bosnia and Herzergovina, Croatia and Serbia to share experiences on natural resources cooperation, flood control and navigation and access to finance.

UNITAR thanks the Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Belgium Goverment for funding the entire project and providing its support.
