Application of Environmental Law, France, 2002

The concrete application of environmental law, whether through soft law principles or hard law instruments, is integral to the management of environmental risks and the protection of the environment. In their role, it is essential for Magistrates to be familiar with comparative and international jurisprudence concerning the environment. Equally, it is crucial for the the public to have access to information and the opportunity to participate in environmental decision-making.

The Seminar on the Application of Environmental Law was conducted between 6 and 8 November, 2002. Eight French-speaking magistrates from Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland participated in the Seminar.

Objectives
- Outline the essential practices for the concrete application of environmental law by analyzing international jurisprudence.
- Discuss the means for assuring public access to information and participation in decision-making (Aarhus Convention).

Outcomes
- Experience-exchange on the application of environmental law.
- Enhanced understanding of the link between international and comparative jurisprudence and the implementation of international environmental law.
