Water is an integral component of the natural environment and its management is consequently critical for the overall protection of the environment. Due to the irreversible nature of many environmental impacts emanating from human activities, it is essential to exercise precaution in the management of water resources for ensuring their sustainable usage. Considering associated international and comparative jurisprudence is essential for the effective application of the legal instruments available for the management of water resources.

The Seminar on Water and Environment was conducted from the 21st to 23rd April, 2004. Thirty French-speaking magistrates from Belgium, France, Italy, and Spain, participated in the Seminar.




Objectives
- Familiarize participants with the main problems associated with water management.
- Present relevant international and comparative jurisprudence; along with relevant national, European, and international texts and regulations.

Outcomes
- Improved understanding of the issues surrounding water management and the means available for the appropriate implementation of applicable environmental laws.
